Photorespiration: Origin and Metabolic Integration in Interacting Compartments

Welcome to Promics, a Research Unit of the German Research Foundation

Photorespiration represents one of the major highways of plant primary metabolism, enabling plants to thrive in the high-oxygen environment of our present atmosphere.

The origin of this high-throughput pathway has been traced back to cyanobacteria, which were the first oxygen-producing prokaryotes and ancestors of plastids. In present day plants, photorespiration is integrated in a much more complex cellular metabolism.

Promics aims at a better understanding of photorespiration in plants' life, environmental adaptation, and evolution.
